I have a confession to make. When I was really young, before I even knew about Nintendo, there was this other simple game for DOS that I was aware of...
It's Aldo's Adventure. Your objective is to get to any treasure chest by jumping over falling/rolling barrels and avoiding flames. You have four lives, and you die in one hit or if you run out of time. From left to right on the upper-left corner, you have the time remaining, your current score, and your life count. Additional treasures give you extra time, and the time remaining is added to your score when you complete the level.
The game itself does not appear to have sound, and even if it does, I'd guess it's a PC speaker masterpiece like many other DOS games.
The default maximum number of barrels is 8, though you can actually adjust it to 6 by typing ALDO 6 in the DOS Prompt, or any number from 1 to 12. If I type ALDO 0, it just gives me the default 8 barrel count.
There are 10 levels in all, and after you beat the 10th, the black and white will invert and you start over again with less time, but your score will be maintained.
Now for my personal take:
The controls are good, but the platforming itself has its issues. I don't really know how to explain it, but it depends on where "the hero's" foot lands. I also don't know what to say about what happens if you fall too far - you only go straight down until you land on solid ground, and you can't move left or right until then.
For the flames, you're safe as long as your feet don't land right on them, the edges are okay to touch, and you can even jump head first into flames as long as your feet don't touch them! With the barrels, they're not easy to predict and they appear unexpectedly. You might walk under a barrel chute and suddenly a barrel falls on your head. Treasure must be collected from the side, or down below, but they act like platforms from above. I think it would have made sense to be able to pick them up instantly from all directions.
That's all I have right now, except for one final note...when I did finally become a fan of Mario, something happened. Now I'm no longer able to take the name "Aldo" seriously! I think I need help!
